Does my skin need UV protection in winter too?

Cold weather does not block UV. The winter SPF clip makes a valid point, without proving the featured brand is superior.

THE CLAIM BEING CHECKED

„UV protection can be necessary in winter too.“

True statement

An editorially formulated question about a current public discussion.

Instagram@newbeautyORIGINAL

In the original @newbeauty clip of 29 October 2026, an EltaMD representative presents winter sun protection at a BeautyPass brand booth. The product presentation and publisher award are commercial context; a specific payment arrangement is not established. Our editorial question checks the general UV claim and does not recommend the product. Original content from @newbeauty · Instagram.

THE ANSWER

What is true about it?

Yes. Ultraviolet radiation can reach the skin on cold days too. Protection may be needed outdoors, particularly at higher elevations or around snow. The American Academy of Dermatology therefore advises against treating sun protection as a summer-only concern. A cool day without a feeling of heat does not establish that UV exposure is harmless.

A CLOSER LOOK

The context behind the claim.

UV exposure can contribute to premature skin ageing. Snow reflects some radiation and can increase exposure. The professional society’s general guidance supports the core winter-protection message but does not test the EltaMD product advertised in the clip. A publisher or readers’ award is not a comparative clinical efficacy study. Sunscreen also cannot block every part of UV exposure.

YOUR NEXT STEP

Making a more informed decision.

Match protection to your outdoor plans: clothing, shade and suitable broad-spectrum sunscreen work together. Follow the product directions and reapply as appropriate, especially after sweating or during prolonged time outdoors. A skin condition or specific questions after an aesthetic procedure may call for individual medical advice. Choose according to product characteristics and tolerability, rather than relying only on a social-media appearance.
